Saturday Update...

Ok... where shall I start? Well, you know Mike took Wed. off to help me out, we got some stuff done and then... he started to feel ill and in pain. Thursday he went to the dr. and discovered that his diverticulosis had turned into diverticulitis, very painful. And so he was put on 2 antibiotics and a pain killer. Friday rolls around and I'm finishing up of the last minute (ok the last few hours) clean up & prep stuff. I made about 5lb.s of pasta salad, a big thing of chocolate chip brownies, I have tons of chips, dip, and cookies. However by the time my parents got here to take the kids for a bit so I could finish up while Mike rested, we realized Mike was in a lot more pain. The pain killers weren't working and it appeared the antibiotics weren't either.

So... he called the dr. to see what he should do and he sent us to the ER department. We canceled the BBQ and I took him to the hospital. After about 6 hours of tests and such, the diverticulitis was confirmed and Mike was given a much stronger antibiotic & pain medication. While we were there they had him on some powerful stuff that knocked him out for most of it and so I was able to actually get some reading done!! I FINALLY got started on the last Left Behind book called, "The Glorious Appearing". I made it almost half way and now I'm hooked enough to keep it going... hooray!

Mike is feeling better today and was able to go back to work. He is even pulling a double... yes, I DID try to keep him home AND I tried to keep him from doing a double shift... but alas, that man can be stubborn. ;o)

I'm soooo looking forward to the 3rd of August. That is our wedding anniversary (8 years!) and the beginning of our family vacation time! Ok, that's about it for now. The kids are in bed, the house isn't bad and so I'm going to go sit for a moment and watch TV while I fold laundry.

Jordan & Katie's "furry friends"... they set these all up on the counter the other night and were heart broken when I said they could NOT stay there forever... so we took a picture so they could remember it. :o) Posted by Hello

Wednesday...

Mike took the day off to help out around the house. Yay! I'm trying to think of what we've done since I last wrote... not too much. Schooling, cleaning, visiting with family. Today we hit Costco, bought the meat for the BBQ... hamburger & ribs. Well I will try to go find some pictures or something to make this site a touch interesting. ;o)

My President...

Looking forward to 4 more years!!!! Posted by Hello

My hero...

Last night my hubby came home and saw my distress... let me cry and whine about the day and then he put me to bed, prayed for me and read to me from Psalms.  He reminded me that I am pregnant & very emotionaly and that today would look a little better... and if not, he would call in sick.  :o)  I love that man!

Well, I did feel better this morning and so I sent him off to work.  We finished most of our homeschool and now we are going to take a quick break to go say "Hi" to Grandpa... it's his birthday today!  More later... I hope!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

It's almost over...

Today was one of thee roughest days so far.  Everything has fallen apart and the house is a disaster... but the kids are in bed now, I have stopped crying and Mike will be home soon.  I figured out how to add a Bush/Cheney news alert at the base of my blog, still can't figure out how to add pictures from another site though.  I was inspired (again) by my friend Cheri, who began a political blog called Decidedly Right.  Love it and hope someday that I will be informed well enough to begin my own & hold my ground.  I know it in my head, but right now if we were to debate... I would freeze up and nothing would get out.  ;o)

Ok, I feel a little better now and need to go put this house back in to some sort of order.

Second Trimester!!!!!!!!!

Woohoo!  We've made it to week 12!  Feeling better & better each week.  Baby is about 3 inches  now and "all major components of the his/her body are formed and now must grow and mature."

My aunt came over today to "fix" the garden.  She planted a nice little tomato plant over a month ago and now it has tripled in size and is thriving, but did not have any support and so it was laying on the ground.  So she made a little wooden "cage" to hold it upright.  Thanks to my aunt I have not only a tomato plant growing, but radishes, carrots, beans, oregano, rosemary, lavender, carnations, and so on.  My only duty is to make sure I get out and WATER the poor things.  So far I've only killed half the rosemary & part of the lavender.  Not bad for someone who has a "black" thumb.  ;o)

We managed to get ALL our homeschooling done today in spite of the heat & humidity and the headache I had.  Hooray!  I love days like that where we can actually finish our goals in the set time!

Ok it is really late (even for me) and I have to sleep now.

Alicia

Jo's haircut is kinda hard to see here, but it's all trimmed up and looking good. Such a big boy! His new friend (the frog) is by him, he got that today from Grammy Sue. Posted by Hello

Before her new "hair-do" got all wet from the sprinkler I thought I would get a quick pic. It's a little tussled, but she is still a cutie!  Posted by Hello

Joshua figured out how to get his bowl to hang from his nose. And yes, I DID put a barrett in his hair... and YES, I DID pay for it... won't do it again. ;O) LOL! Posted by Hello

Checkin' in...

A few days have passed since I last wrote, sorry.  Let's see... our weekend started on Wed. this week (3-day one too!), Mike took us to a new Chinese restaurant and the kids did good and the food was great!  Thursday as I was on my way out the door to get my hair cut I ran downstairs to get a water from the other fridge... on my way down I realized something smelled "funny".  As I followed the odor I was horrified to discover that our freezer died and inside was rotten meat.  A LOT of rotten meat.  A while back we purchased 1/4 of a cow, so lots of steaks, roasts, hamburger, and we had just bought a bunch of ribs that were on a great sale.  Next time we decide to go buy any fraction of a cow, we are getting a brand new freezer beforehand!

My grandparents' 54th anniversary was yesterday, so we did a surprise dinner for them at my aunt's house.  That was fun, however I wasn't feeling well and so I spent most the time trying to cool down and rest.

Today we had a nice lunch with Grammy Sue and got to hear all about her recent trip to Maine.  I would love to go there some year, Mike mentioned last night that he thinks we should take a family trip there BY CAR.  K, maybe if we get/rent a nice big motor home... then I think I could deal with it.

Right now Mike and the kids (except Josh) are out getting their hairs cut.  ;o)  Josh is trying to destroy the house as fast as he possibly can before they get back.  He loves "hats" and will find things to put on his head all the time.  Today it was a spatula, but it wouldn't stay on his head and so he left it on the kitchen floor.  Yesterday it was a washcloth, a strainer, a CD, an actual HAT and some of Katie's pants/shirts.  I have some pictures somewhere, I will have to go find them and post them here in a bit.

Tomorrow is my niece's 2nd b-day, "Happy Birthday Selah!" and it is also supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year.  I think the kids and I will hole up on my air-conditioned room and read books and perhaps I will make a fort for them to play in.  We are also due to begin the book "The Glorious Flight" tomorrow for the FIAR curriculum.  I have the book and the video, but need to prepare a bit more tonight so we have more to add to it.

Off to find some pictures to post!

in God's grace,
Alicia

I could not have said it better myself...

My dear friend Cheri (more like a twin sister that I think was seperated from me at birth) wrote this in her blog and I HAVE to post it on mine... it is priceless and fits exactly how I feel.  Bravo Cheri!  Cut & pasted from her site...

This is an email I sent to my mom's group on Yahoo back in 2001. (Sept. 11, 2001 was Nathan's 3rd birthday btw)

From: "Brorsen"
Date: Thu Sep 13, 2001 10:29 pm
Subject: realizing reality and having to vent

I was just watching CMT and broke down as Martina McBride sang the National Anthem. I think I'm getting passed the shocked stage and moving into the anger ... and while fear isn't in the 5 stages, I'm defiantly there too. I cannot get passed the mind that could be so twisted and full of hate that they would elaborately scheme and plan an attack on innocent people. I sat here thinking some momma isn't able to hug her babies tonight, a wife is just wishing she could scold her hubby for leaving out dirty socks and the emptiness that must be in full force on those that just want to hear something, anything about their loved ones. I have never been a pacifist...I'm not so bent that I'm militia mindset either--- but the whole concept of ''just fighting this war with peace'' is so beyond me right now...I cannot even BEGIN to wrap my mind around it. WHAT? So your saying that we should just say, ''0oooh that was a very bad thing you did you, nameless, faceless coward'', we understand that you were having a bad day and felt the need to express your anger in ways that are not acceptable...we see your lack of judgment, we understand that it was not really meant to be soooo destructive, so we're just going have a big old candle light vigil and hope that our President and congress won't do anything so rash as to retaliate or shoot a gun in your direction (I'm sorry I had to turn CNN when they were covering the vigil ''promoting peace'' PLEASE!!!) Can we never be safe again...I'm all about playing fair. I'm all about peace and unity...but when someone jumps in the sandbox, and tears down the castle, then I say, remove them from the playground...if you can't play nice...then hey, you just have to deal with the consequences. I am not promoting an unplanned, fly off the handle and just start bombing folks approach. I think we need to make sure we identify the enemy, and then take appropriate steps. Until we began to show that WE ARE THE USA, we walk quiet and carry a big stick (and the stick is OUT) then these folks will continue to threaten us. They right now control us...they've closed our airports, federal buildings. They've taken away our entertainment and more than anything they've violated our peace of mind. They hate the U.S., they hate peace, they hate anything that isn't them, so while I think it sounds all pretty and flowery to say ''lets fight this war with weapons of peace'' I'd like to also point out that those idiots would gladly walk right up to your peace loving self and blow you and your kids away without thinking, much less thinking twice. They aren't reasonable nor do they want to be reasoned with...they are killers, they have one agenda, and let me tell you PEACE ain't it. Warmly~ Cheri : )

That email pretty much summed up my feelings then and it continues to echo my feelings to this day. Sure there is raw emotion in that email, but while I have a more clear perspective and more information about the ''nameless faceless enemy'' the sentiment is still the same.. I was not personally touched by the 9/11 attacks, in that I didn't have any relative or friend who lost their lives. I well remember the pain and sadness that overwhelmed me. I cannot imagine (nor would I pretend to say that I could) the pain of those personally touched that day. But here we stand, now, almost 3 years later and America has lost that feeling, that unity we chose to have based on Sept. 11th. I know all the arguments. Really I do. I've heard them. I know folks think we shouldn't have gone into Iraq. I know many, many young men and women have lost their lives in this cause. I know we haven't hit the motherload regarding WMD's (the whole faulty intelligence, or did we even need WMD's to justify our going in is a whole nother post). See I know I fall into that group of ''dangerous'' folks. You know the folks that think you should be able to own a gun if you want to (and finish reading: I also think it is personal responsibility to teach proper gun safety and to not allow CHILDREN to play with guns. Guns are a tool. Yes, they kill people. [But I don't think accessibility to guns is the reason for the violence in society. I think, maybe that goes back to parents abdicating their responsibility to raise their children with any kind of boundaries, allowing them to have access to the internet and violent movies/music/video games at will, and giving them no moral compass with which to guide their lives. But again, that's another post.] and that is it our right and our job to defend our country from both enemies seen and unseen. See, my husband served almost 9 years in service to our country. He now works in Homeland Security. I've been through deployments. My husband has been gone for months upon months at a time. But my husband volunteered to do that. See he joined the all volunteer ARMY. No one made him join. No one drafted him. No one tricked him (well, lol, beyond that general recruiter fluff you are fed; and only military folks will fully get that reference) into joining. While no one likes to think of going to war, or fighting. It's kind of an understood thing military=front line of defense. I don't think anyone in our current military service marches around to the cadence ''kill, kill, blood makes the grass grow'' . I'm sure many of them would rather be home, than hanging out in 120 degree heat. They are doing their job, even if they don't 'enjoy' it and for that I am thankful. I knew an ARMY Ranger once and at the time he was on drill sergeant rotation. He would tell of breaking down during formation because some new recruit didn't have their BDU's fixed in line with regulation. I of course balked at his tantrum and told him as much. He responded ''exactly how am I supposed to trust him with an M16 if I can't trust him to button his BDU's correctly'' Needless to say I shut up. :) But I digress. I'm so frustrated with America and even with our current administration concerning Homeland Security. Let me emphatically say I don't feel any safer necessarily today than I felt Sept. 10, 2001 before the tragedy. You know what I feel? I feel more aware. See now I know people will fly planes into buildings with no regard. I don't think the TSA or HS has made a huge amount of progress in keeping our skies safe. See because we are so concerned with being politically correct, we don't want to offended a terrorist by thinking he might be a terrorist. I'm not going to pretend America has it all tied up. Our countries past is littered with bad choices. But really for me,I don't get it. See on September 11th 2001, terrorist flew planes into buildings killing over 3000 people. These terrorist were of a certain culture and race. Does that make everyone of that race guilty. Well, no. But does that mean we should go out of our way not to offend anyone of that race and not potentially profile them? [I know, I know, I'm white, I have privilege of parenthood, yada yada yada] See for me Sept. 11 should have thrown etiquette out the window. Profile everyone. It is amazing to me that if you wear orthotic shoes you will not be asked to take them off. Doesn't that seem like quite the loophole? You can't take knitting needles or nail clippers. But you can have a walking cane to bludgeon someone with? Now before you send me emails about so and so with a bad knee. My mother has severe RA (rheumatoid arthritis). She wears a leg brace everyday of her life. She uses a cane for assistance at times. It takes my mom a good 10 minutes to get her shoes on each day. While yes it would be annoying and bothersome for my mom to take off her shoe and brace. I know that she would...cause see, my mom, she isn't a terrorist. [And yes my parents do fly often] To think that they will stop a 105 yr old woman and wand her making sure there are no explosives, while letting 25 people who very well may be innocent, but fit the profile go by for the sake of being PC makes me crazy. Its like this, if your innocent, you are innocent. Yes, you may feel profiled. Yes you may be annoyed. Yes it may be an inconvenience. But when it's all said and done you get on the plane and fly to your destination. By having these quotas and limits to who and what can be profiled, really we are just kidding ourselves to think we are accomplishing anything. I'm sick to death of trying not to offend people. Good heavens, remember those planes hitting those towers? Remember the Pentagon? Remember that field in Pennsylvania? Remember that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach? Remember that deep, dark sadness that enveloped you for days afterward? Remember seeing a plane flying overhead and being robbed of the innocence of just watching the contrail without also having to battle thoughts of ''what if?'' Until we make some very deliberate and potentially very offending decisions about profiling I'm afraid those visions, that sick feeling, that hurt are all just on the horizon, again.

Over 1/4 done, Fish ponds & Humidity...

I just realized today that I'm 1/4 done with this pregnancy!!!  One more week and I will be in the 2nd trimester.  I can't believe how fast time is flying by.

So on Saturday Katie & Jordan went over to the neighbors as they were having the reception for the 2nd wedding ceremony and they would go back & forth with some of the kids from there... I would occasionally check on them from my bedroom window (I can see their backyard from there) and everytime I looked they were fine, running around being silly.  Well a short time laterKatie came home dripping wet from head to toe.  Apparently she was looking at the fish in the 2-foot fish pond/fountain that they had set up in their backyard and she fell in... completely.  Water in the nose & lots of crying.  No adults saw her, which I find odd as the fish pond was a focal point for the wedding and there was about 50-75 adults in the backyard... so we got her dried up and then I made sure they stayed in our yard & within my reach for the rest of the day.
Today it was about 85+ degrees outside, but the humidity is high... very muggy, that heavy heat that makes you not want to do or go anywhere.  Today I didn't feel good and this heat did NOT help.  However the temp. is now dropping (it's about 10:25pm now) and it is somewhat bearable (still 83 degrees inside) so I better get to cleaning up and put the kiddos to bed early tonight.

Hope to write more later, but no promises.  ;o)

Kids, Weddings with "Ring Masters" and AC

Today our neighbors had the first part of their 2-day wedding in their back yard.  The nephew (he is I think 5yrs. old) of the lady who was getting married comes over here to play whenever he is visiting and so yesterday as they started to prepare for the wedding he came over with a few other relatives and then a few neighborhood kids joined in... I believe I counted a total of 10 kids running in & out and around the house!

Today as they were cooking food outside and putting up tables & chairs - much to my dismay - they invited Katie & Jordan over to THEIR house while they SET UP for the wedding... I was soooooo worried my kids would do something to the wedding decor or just get in the way!  But they did great and were invited to stay for the wedding... that however did NOT happen... I just did not have enough nerves left for that!

The little boy said that he wanted Jordan to come over and see him be the "ring master"... I wanted to see that for myself!!  LOL!  Our neighbors have been planning this wedding for a year now, last summer they had the big engagement party and since then they have spent many weekends sprucing up the place.  The wedding started today, with a ceremony for family and then tomorrow the friends get to come over for another ceremony.  I got to peek out my window with my mom to see the beautiful bride walk down the isle and the little "ring master" walk down with the pillow (no whip, no circus stands or lions - hee hee) and even could hear part of the ceremony... pregnancy hormones were true to form and I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.  ;o)

My parents came over today for dinner and my dad & Mike installed the AirConditioning in our room!  Hooray!  Perhaps now I can sleep better and I have a little "refuge" to run to when it gets too hot for a pregnant momma to handle.

Well I better get going so we can get up early and get our school done before the next wedding starts and we have kids ringing the doorbell wondering when Jordan will be out to play!

Mike, Midwife, Vacation and stuff...

Ok, so Mike had his dr. appt. this morning at 11am with the Ear, Nose & Throat specialist, we also managed to get the ultrasound scheduled for his liver and if he gets the OK from his next physical... then he is going to have surgery on August 30th for his sleep apnea.  They will go in and take out his tonsils, his uvula and part of his soft palate.  Apparently this is extremely painful and will keep him out of work for about 2 weeks.  After all is healed, hopefully he will then be able to sleep without interruption.  Right now he stops breathing about 15-20 times an hour.

On to my midwifery appointment... I am 10wks. & 4days along, everything looks good and we got to hear baby moving and his/her heartbeat for a second.  My midwife is leaving for Fiji tomorrow and will be gone for a month building a medical center with her family & a small group from her church.  There are many obstacles, but we are all praying for them.

Next on the agenda... Vacation.  We have been planning on a week camping trip, but I heard of a great idea from a lady on the new Titus Two forum, where they do "home vacationing".  Mike likes the idea and I think that with Josh being at a "difficult" age for camping (too young to know not to go by the fire, the water, not to eat the sticks, bugs or rocks and too old for a playpen/chair/etc...) it would be MORE enjoyable for ALL of us if we did the "home vacation".  So we are working on our plan now:  from Aug. 3-Aug.7th we will sleep at home & eat some meals at home, but spend the days/evenings out & about hitting all the touristy places and doing fun stuff as a family.  So far we only have one place on the agenda that Jordan asked for and that is the NEW Reptile Zoo!

One of those days...

Ok, so you all know that I started off the day crying over the toaster. Well it didn't get much better after that. This pregnancy has been sooooo different from the others and I'm just not feeling good at all. I tried to sleep as much as possible... whenever Josh went to take a nap, so did I. But I'm still exhausted. And the kicker of it all is I won't be able to sleep tonight. Oh well. Only 2 more weeks until I reach 2nd trimester!! Praying I will feel a touch more normal then. Until that time... I need to just do what I can, beg for patience & strength and accept that my home will be a touch unkempt for a while and that will just have to be OK.

We didn't get much school done today, Jordan did however (even in his extra hyper-weirded out mode tonight) get his math done and it was all correct & done within the time range I was hoping for! Love those moments! Jordan's reading is doing great too, he read to me & Katie today and has been reading independently as well.

Katie is showing a slight interest in letters, she can write the letter "M" and "A", however hasn't a clue what letter it is. ;O)

I have to go and do a quick pre-Hubby clean up. May the Lord bless you all & your families. :o)

The Toaster…

I don’t know what it is, but the toaster and I have NEVER gotten along. This morning was no exception. I don’t know exactly how many toasters we have actually had, but EACH one has been trouble.

The only difference is this morning it brought me to tears… ok, so I’m pregnant and yes… everything makes me cry, but I had to throw away 4 pieces of toast this morning as they were either burnt or torn up. For some reason there are 2 metal sections inside on 2 of the 4 toast slice openings that are halfway up and so… if you don’t have REALLY tough/thick bread it will often get caught as it tries to pop up, which results in a squished bread, you then have to unplug the annoying little appliance and try to tear it out. At this point it is basically not edible. Or the toast leans too far towards one side and so when you look in to check on it, the toast APPEARS fine… until you pop it out… then you realize that one side is perfectly toasted and the other side is burnt to a crisp. :o( The other thing it does to me, if the other two don’t happen, is it will get stuck and won’t pop up… so unless I’m standing over it watching for it to get done, then it burns.

I hate the toaster, I really hate the toaster… I cannot wait to get rid of this and begin a new adventure with another one.

The beginning of a new week…

So as some of you know, we start our new week on Saturday. We started back up school, I slacked for the past 2 weeks due to my morning sickness… but we are back on track!! Hooray!

We started out with “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel”, discussed briefly the different sources of power. Moved on to some Bible, math, reading and writing practice.

I’m 10 weeks along now and beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel… morning sickness is now bearable, with only moments of it becoming really bad. And I find it really hard to complain about morning sickness as I have never actually thrown up and I know many other women who have had to be hospitalized just from morning sickness, so all in all I need to be thankful and remember that I’m quite blessed. :o)

Since Kaitlyn used the permanent blue Sharpie pen to put “graffiti” on her walls, we have been thinking of painting. So tonight Grandpa & Grandma showed up with a grand idea… G’pa watches kiddos and G’ma & I go to Home Depot and get some ideas! So many things… my mind is overcomplicating things to whole new levels! LOL! As we narrow down (and get a bit more realistic) the ideas I will share with you what we are hoping to do in the kids’ rooms.

A Wise Woman...

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
– Proverbs 14:1

This is my verse for right now… I don’t know how long, but I really need this one to sink in and transform my heart. I desire to be a “wise woman”, but have a lot to learn and many areas that need growth. So I decided to start off by doing a word study on this verse, here are the definitions and my thoughts:

Word Study from the KJV Strong’s Dictionary

Wise – from the Hebrew root word “chokmah” meaning: Wisdom, Skilled, Wits, and Shrewdness. I have been a wife for almost 8 years and a mother for 6 years. I am becoming more and more skilled each passing year, but still have so far to go. I am not an organized person; I am in my mind… a perfectionist at heart… which is more disabling than one would think. If I can’t do something “perfect” then I give up and don’t do it at all. However if I would listen to myself as I lecture Jordan on this very issue I would realize that perfection does not just “happen”, I did not become the perfect “housewife” the minute I became a wife. I did not become the best mom just because I had a child. But with each day that I have the honor to work at it, I am getting better at both. To obtain wisdom and become wise, skilled (organized, story teller, puppet maker, homemaker, loving), to have wits (intelligence, common sense, understanding) and to be shrewd (smart, clever, reasonable and on the ball).

Buildeth – from the Hebrew word “banah” meaning: Build, Build up, Repair, Set up, Have children and Obtain children. This definition was interesting, not only do we “wise women” need to build up our homes (families), but we also need to repair. There are many times where I wish I didn’t have the job of ‘building’ or ‘repairing’, but God has made it clear in His word that I am the best person in this family for doing just that. I am to help my husband and he is to love me. :o) The other part of this definition that I did not see coming was the part about children… ‘to have and/or obtain children’. However it makes sense. Children help us to grow, to learn and to become better people. As I bring up children in this home I reflect on much more than I ever thought I would. With each child my heart has become softer, more loving. With each child I find myself more alive. And with each child I find myself in more desperate need for God’s strength. ;o)

Foolish – from the Hebrew root word “eviyl” meaning: be foolish; of one who despises wisdom; of one who mocks when guilty; of one who is quarrelsome; of one who is licentious. I find it mildly humorous that the root word for foolish is “eviyl”. Did you know that “quarrelsome” means: Apt to quarrel; given to brawls and contention; inclined to petty fighting; easily irritated or provoked to contest; irascible; choleric; petulant, grouchy, hot-tempered, and difficult? Ouch.

Down – from the Hebrew word “harac” meaning: to tear down, break down, overthrow, beat down, break, break through, destroy, pluck down, pull down, throw down, ruined, destroyer. Not only can a foolish woman tear down the home, but it is equally destructive to “overthrow” it. Beat down has an image of constant badgering… mean words and actions. When I read “pluck down” I can imagine a wife slowly and quietly plucking away at the home, stealing the joy of the house… nothing major or big, just little things… an unhappy tone, disapproving glances, hiding hurts deep down and not dealing with them, etc… they may be minor irritants/plucks but eventually all the good will be gone.
